The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) has endorsed the Green Growth Community on sustainable growth in the Mediterranean region

We are very pleased to announce that the Interreg MED Green Growth Community has recently received the Union for the Mediterranean Labelling!

Based on the cooperation already launched more than one year ago, we have progressively started to complement each other mechanisms in terms of feeding future policy by integrating Interreg MED Green Growth outcomes into the UfM framework, participating in each other’s events and working groups, providing direct technical advices on the UfM Environment Agenda 2030, currently under-preparation, and much more.

On the 2nd of October 2019, the Senior Officials of the 43 UfM Member States met in Barcelona and labelled the Interreg MED Green Growth community among other regional projects.

The UfM label is attributed to regional cooperation projects by the unanimous endorsement of the 43 UfM countries that meet on a regular basis through their country representatives, or Senior Officials, designated by the respective ministries of foreign affairs.

The label acknowledges the potential of the Green Growth community to deliver concrete benefits to the citizens of the Euro-Mediterranean region and contribute to sub-regional and regional integration.

Overall, the UfM label

  • Brings the support and ownership of 43 countries
  • Helps to find solutions for complex regional projects
  • Facilitates access to finance by providing access to a strong network
  • Makes a project idea become a reality on the ground

The labelling of the Interreg MED Green Growth Community is in line with the Union for the Mediterranean’s mandate of advancing cooperation in the field of green, circular economy and sustainable development in the Northern Mediterranean and Western Mediterranean, with a view to transfer and capitalize to other countries of the region. The Secretariat of the UfM looks forward to a close cooperation with our Green Growth Community to raising awareness within the wider Mediterranean Region, monitoring its successful implementation, facilitating links and cooperation with other related programmes running in the Mediterranean to maximize cooperation, exploring opportunities for transfer and capitalization to other countries of the region, thus helping to ensure its sustainability.
