Interreg MED Green Growth Community invited to Union for the Mediterranean

The Interreg MED Green Growth Community participated to the Working Group on Environment and Climate Change of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), which took place at the premises of the Secretariat in Palau Reial de Pedralbes in Barcelona on 12-13 November 2018. The Union for the Mediterranean is an intergovernmental institution bringing together the 28 European Union Member States and 15 countries from the Southern and Eastern shores of the Mediterranean to promote dialogue and cooperation. The meeting gathered country representatives and regional stakeholders, as well as representatives of several European projects.

The Working Group aimed to review progress in the implementation up to date of the recommendations of the 2014 UfM Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Climate Change, discuss on the priorities for action on environment and climate change in the Mediterranean region after 2020, provide suggestions for further action, and follow up.

On the first day, the lead partner of the Interreg MED Green Growth community, the BETA Tech Center – University of Vic, was invited to present the community and its projects to seek potential involvement, capitalisation, and transfer of results to other countries of the Mediterranean region. In particular, the collaboration between the Interreg MED Green Growth community and UfM is three-fold:

  • The UfM through its policy-platform-projects dimension can offer support in decision making at wider regional scale, enhance capitalization/transfer of results, and maintain a regular policy/technical dialogue to ensure sustainability over time.
  • Possibility of labelling so as to receive the political endorsement to initiatives, actions, projects and of interest to the Mediterranean regional agenda.
  • Participation of UfM members and external experts in the Thematic Working Groups and events of the Interreg MED Green Growth community.

Other Interreg MED communities and projects, such as Sustainable Tourism and Biodiversity Protection communities and Plastics Busters MPAs and MedCoast4BlueGrowth projects were also present at the meeting to strengthen the collaboration between UfM and Interreg MED projects.
